HISTORY

In the year 1908, Silas C. Smith made a significant move to the Lonsdale Community and identified the absence of a church aligned with his beliefs. This realization inspired him to bring together a group of like-minded individuals to form a Prayer Group, marking the beginnings of a new congregation. Seeking affiliation with the East Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the group was fortunate to have the Reverend B. J. Martin appointed to guide the establishment of the new church. With the guidance of Rev. Martin and Presiding Elder Weber, the group acquired land and constructed their inaugural place of worship. Initially dubbed the "Prayer Group," the church evolved into the Lonsdale C.M.E. (Colored Methodist Episcopal) Church Mission and was eventually renamed Martin Chapel in recognition of Rev. Martin's pivotal role in constructing the original church edifice. As time passed, the congregation outgrew its initial building, prompting the construction of the current structure in 1961. Opening its doors for worship in 1963 under the oversight of the esteemed architect and ordained minister, DeWitt Sanford Dykes, Sr., the church embarked on a new chapter of its rich history. Throughout the years, challenges were faced with unwavering faith and perseverance. The period from 1963 to 1989 saw the church operating solely on Sunday services due to limited membership and financial constraints. However, hope remained steadfast as the vision for a brighter future started to take shape. With the appointment of Reverend Velma Smith, who also oversaw Burlington United Methodist Church before its closure in 1990, a new era dawned for Martin Chapel. The church became a hub for community development activities, hosting programs such as the "Methodist Connection" choir and educational initiatives like the Wednesday Night tutoring program. In 1992, a significant milestone was reached as the church acquired a van and expanded its property holdings, laying the groundwork for future growth and outreach efforts. The congregation's commitment to deepening their faith and expanding their presence in the community propelled them towards their collective vision. Under the leadership of Reverend John Jackson, the church witnessed the realization of parts of their vision, including the growth of the Sunday School and Children & Youth Ministry, as well as the enhancement of community engagement initiatives. Through various programs, partnerships, and a shared commitment to inclusivity, Martin Chapel continued to thrive and evolve. Further enriching its legacy, the church celebrated Alan Jones as the first member to be ordained into the ministry, signifying a new chapter in its spiritual journey. With Reverend Linda L. Smith at the helm, the church has undertaken significant renovations, outreach projects, and community-building efforts, solidifying its position as a beacon of faith and service in the Lonsdale Community.
